What is a Portfolio Manager or Investment Counsellor?

As defined by the Portfolio Management Association of Canada (PMAC), a Portfolio Manager (also referred to as an Investment Counsellor or Asset Manager) is a firm and people who manage investment portfolios on behalf of private clients, foundations, endowments and pensions. Portfolio managers differ from mass-market or retail investment managers because they manage larger amounts of money for fewer clients. This often results in lower management fees and a higher level of service.

Is there a minimum investment required?

Investment counselling firms that provide discretionary investment management services require that families meet certain thresholds for investible assets. Ekaton requires that its clients have a minimum of $2 million of investible assets under the stewardship of Ekaton.

How is Ekaton compensated?

Ekaton is paid a fee calculated as a % of the client assets for which it provides stewardship and guidance. All fees are fully disclosed for clients and a year-end summary is provided for income tax purposes (where applicable).

Is Ekaton registered with the Ontario Securities Commission?

Yes, Ekaton is registered with the Ontario Securities Commission. The regulatory framework that Ekaton operates under is set out in National Instrument 31-103, Registration Requirements, Exemptions, and Ongoing Registrant Obligations. Click here for information on OSC registrations.

What is the origin of the name Ekaton?
